Mars versus Venus

13 March, 2009 | 13 comments | Category: dating, Relationships, sex

Eve ~~ is our next new writer with some feisty unapologetic, no-holds-barred commentary on dating, sex, guys, gals and the mystical world between physiology and emotions within the universe of love. The aspiring physician brings her first ‘senduQ Sex Journal’ Entry…

In her words: We call this section our little sexy journal~dairy. Here, we’ll take down some facts and thoughts on, dating, sex, gender and relationships. We also gossip about why we love guys, why we hate guys, why some of us are single (ahhemm cuz all the guys around are kinda useless ?), why we like to stay single, why the rest of us are happy with those fools, why we are not ready to settle for less than our prince charming, why we believe in soul mates, why we don’t believe in soul mates (just mates)…the list goes on. Our ideas range from silly and humorous to serious and soulful… …”

So I decided it would be best to start with something bold to break the sex diary ice. I will list some comparisons of body biology and chemistry of men and women. So I’d say it’s probably time to wonder about one’s real sexuality if any of the symptoms listed under the opposite sex apply to you haha *wink

Men (Mars)

  1. Among primates, man has the largest and thickest penis.
  2. Studies show that, for some unknown reason, the higher the level of education, the more men tend to have wet dreams.
  3. The male fetus is capable of attaining an erection during the last trimester (a.k.a men are pervs even before birth)
  4. Percent of men who say they masturbate: 60% (do you think the rest 40% are telling the truth?)
  5. Average # of erections per day for a man: 11 ( seriously ewwwww)
  6. Males, on average, think about sex every 7 seconds (surprise surprise…)

Ladies (Venus)

  1. Women with a Ph.D. are twice as likely to be interested in a one-night stand than those with only a Bachelor’s degree ( hmmm…one might wonder what they teach the ladies in graduate school)
  2. A female orgasm is a powerful painkiller due to the release of endorphins (ladies don’t use headaches as an excuse to not have sex….just say N-O!!!)
  3. The maximum speed at which erotic sensations travel from our skin to our brain is about 156 miles per hour (hot dammm.. that is about 1/5 of the speed of sound)
  4. About 65% of American women masturbate
  5. According to Penthouse magazine, more women complain about infrequent sex than men do
  6. 19% of women think about sex everyday or several times a day.
  7. Obviously, it is hard to generalize and give any conclusive insights about the difference between men and woman as far as sex is concerned. In my opinion, both guys and girls want sex really really bad but woman are shyer acting upon it. I really think woman operate their innate self-control more than men do. Why? Well, biologically speaking, evolution built men to be more dominant and thus more aggressive, while woman have more of a maternal subtlety about them. Society also plays a role by encouraging boys to be tougher and rougher. Even at an early age, boys play with superman and toy guns while little girls dress their Barbies and have tea parties. So could it be because of the Y chromosome or does society play a role? Is it true that men are more sexoholic than woman? Why do women find masturbating so strange (I know most of my girlfriends do)? …Well you be the judge.

  • Eve…interesting facts. But men are not built more dominant and aggressive than females in all species. In other organisms, the females are larger and more dominant and the males are more colorful to attract the females (Male peacocks). .So i don’t think physical dominance is associated with sexdrive.
But, like you said the human species is special in that it’s influenced by many socio-cultural phenomenon eg: religion(the most powerful) that permit polygamy allow males to exhibit such behaviours but encourages females to exhibit modesty. Reproduction also wears out the female body quickly (having children= osteoporosis, taking care of children(maternal bond)-no time to work outside the house and provide for the family, etc). This keeps females weaker (physically and socially), and makes the males the providers (up until now atleast…now adays you can pay people to have a baby for you…lol), giving them the social, physical, and economic upperhand. Masterbating in general is considered strange because it is prohibited in many religions eg: many christian dominations and it is stranger in females because of the social and cultural issues.

  • Hey Semhal…you are right but I guess I was talking about specifically humans…I was think of the “evolutionary psychology” in reference to the hunting and gathering society. Hunting probably required some sort of competition and aggression–which was done by men. And also in some animal groups, the males would have to out compete their fellow competitors to get the female of their choice….I came across this really interesting / controversial article that argues that rape is a reproductive adaptation for less successful male to achieve fitness (pass on their genes)…It is obviously criminally misguided and I don’t really buy the whole story but it was interesting in a creepy way.

And Nani “Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus.” It is actually a book by John Gray which was published in May 1992.

  • EVE, For the questions you raised, the social factor definitely plays an important role in giving an upper hand to males by giving them the freedom of openly expressing their sexual feelings. Where as women have to be modest. If a woman even wants to express her sexuality she is labeled as someone who is a slut and even worse. As for the masturbation – you mentioned society has disconnected women from their vagina. Society sees the vagina as solely for the purpose of intercourse (to satisfy the male) and to give birth (esp in Ethiopian culture). We internalize all these societal messages — like the vagina is for the man, man is the only figure who can express his sexuality freely and he is the only figure driven by sex. These messages force women to suppress their own desires. even if we have desires, we try to convince ourselves it is against the norm, it is considered sin. All these factors contribute to the lack of expressiveness of female sexuality. The other thing is, if we can/learn to masturbate we don’t need men to satisfy us sexually, giving an upper hand to women. Most men would not appreciate that because the power is in a woman’s hand now, wouldn’t you agree to some extent?

  • LOL i never know that part was called dabo until very recently actually, lol
you’re right women are shyer than men in expressing themselves, especially sexually, but I think we take men’s sexuality a bit to the extreme. Across cultures men are portrayed as sexual animals, in one way or the other, but are they really? The more guys I know the more I’m noticing that they can be just as shy as they girls, but how they communicate it is different, they have superficial bravado (not all of them) to portray the image of confidence. I wonder why?! maybe it’s how boys are raised, as being expected to be the pursuer while girls are to be the pursued (except the last time I went to Ethiopia, it was the reverse and the girls were doing the pursuing, I don’t know wut the hell happened in such a short time)and I don’t think the stats here prove that men are meant to be sexual animals (even tho it says they think abt sex every 7 seconds) I would argue the stats may be biased or at least not accurate, after all if we agree that women are shyer in the area of sexuality they may not be accurately reporting their umm urges

  • Wechew gud! alu Basha Zerfu.

“…..you mentioned society has disconnected women from their vagina. Society sees the vagina as solely for the purpose of intercourse (to satisfy the male) and to give birth (esp in Ethiopian culture)….”

Speaking of being disconnected, let us not forget FGM, that affects women’s sexuality.

  • I know TSehaytu…I am all for learning masturbation for those who can do it very well & get satisfied with it…But sometimes I find it hard to see where the fine line is …especially seeing it from a religious point of view…we ethiopians are religious ( i think)….honestly speaking, I always wonder if masturbating is a sin..just because we do it solely for sexual satisfaction….but then again that also makes sleeping with a guy for just a sexual satisfaction a sin as well..so I dont know…But we always sin in other ways…is one sin bigger than the other?…i dunno…lol…so its something I always wonder about and I dont really have an answer for…But if woman start practicing masturbation then there will be less STDs, unwanted pregenancies…etc…Personally I support it ( I think)..lol…..

Nani shame on you..lol..u didnt know it was called dabo…heheh…i wonder what u used to call it….

Mamitu..I know female mutilation (is that how you spell it?) is def. something that needs our attention….

But overall its really intersting to see how society influences men and women’s sexuality even here in the US…crazy

  • Semhalye…I will forward u that crazy article..seriuosly what is the world coming to?

Nani, March 26th, 2009 at 3:04 am:

  • emilish Eve, i had a rather chic name which i don’t care to share here … lol but don’t u think the stats are biased tho, just as our perception of both sexes are … ?

tpeace, March 27th, 2009 at 12:45 am:

  • ine imilew…everything is so sexualized it even seems the intimacy in sex has become more carnal lately…instant gratification, pleasurable activity. on masturbation — there’s a lot of research that says it’s useful and healthy from alleviating insomnia to prep for better sex with a partner…etc.

on the female sexuality bit — ye so much about cultures seems to be about limiting it. makes u wonder what’s the whole world scared of?? doesn’t it..?

eve ~ i dunno if i agree whether the ‘self-control’ in women is about their maternal ‘subtlety’ as opposed to dominance…i think it’s tied to a tendency toward keeping together a nurturing family that leads to survival of strong and cared-for kids as opposed to maybe a male evolutionary priority of ‘spreading one’s gene’s/seeds’…

Nani, March 28th, 2009 at 4:53 pm:

  • well according to this class on Human sexuality that I took, women were not “made” to be subservient here’s how the explanation goes …
So women are the bearers of children, and men well father them (lol) but men could never be sure of the kids as really being their own, so to be really certain once they get their women (u could say marry them … whatever the institution) they restrict and control them out of the need to be sure that their women really are giving birth to their babies … which also ties back to the old adage … “bare feet and pregnant” – people say this saying as some what more ‘romantically’ nowadays, I’ve seen it once or twice on movies but the full saying is keeping one’s woman “bare feet in the winter and pregnant in the summer” … if a woman is bare feet in the winter she can’t set a foot out of her home, and if she’s pregnant in the summer, no man will want her (find her as attractive)

so the notion that somehow women are created to take the ‘supporter’s’ role or the shadow of a man … is a bit stretched, but then many refer to the bible as hewan (eve-what a coincidence :P ) being created as Adam’s supporter … i can’t argue with the bible, but I don’t think they bible refers to women needing to succumb to dominance

eve, March 28th, 2009 at 5:19 pm:

  • I agree the stats are def. biased..by no means are these stats. conclusive….but I just thought I should put it out there to kinda start a discussion and see how everyone reacts to it…

Nani “bare feet in the winter and pregnant in the summer”…is very interesting….

And I think we all are def. a living evidence that women not needing to succumb to dominance

Tpeace I def agree that…the intimacy secret of sex is really blurry nowadays…
